Understanding Ayurveda: A Beginner’s Guide to the Doshas

Kapha Dosha

The Kapha dosha is made up of the elements of water and earth. It is associated with stability and structure and is responsible for the body’s immune system and fluid balance. When the Kapha dosha is in balance, a person is loving, compassionate, and grounded. However, when it is out of balance, a person may experience weight gain, congestion, lethargy, depression, and respiratory issues.

Balancing the Doshas

In Ayurveda, the goal is to achieve a balance between the three doshas to promote health and wellness. To do this, Ayurvedic practitioners may recommend a combination of dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, and herbal remedies that are tailored to a person’s dosha type. 

For example, a person with a Vata imbalance may be advised to eat warm, nourishing foods, practice restorative yoga, and use warming spices like ginger and cinnamon. A person with a Pitta imbalance, on the other hand, may be advised to eat cooling, alkalizing foods, practice meditation, and use cooling herbs like mint and coriander.
